Demonstrating transparency in your value chain, also sometimes called the chain of custody, is becoming a key differentiator for businesses as consumers and other stakeholders expect more transparency on social and environmental issues.

The chain of custody concept has emerged from the food and product safety area. The concept centres around tracing a product, or parts of a product back to their source.

A good example of this is IceBreaker's Merino Baa Codes, which shows how each article of clothing has been sourced and managed prior to reaching consumers.

This concept is increasingly being used to demonstrate a product's environmental and social credentials as well as product safety.
